What Are the Disadvantages of Benzoyl Peroxide?
Benzoyl peroxide is an effective acne ingredient, but it isn’t suitable for everyone. One of its most common disadvantages is skin dryness. You may experience tightness, flaking, redness or mild irritation, particularly when you first introduce it into your routine.
It can also cause burning or stinging, especially if you have sensitive skin or use it too frequently. Using several strong acne products at the same time, such as benzoyl peroxide, exfoliating acids and retinoids, can make irritation worse.
Another disadvantage is that benzoyl peroxide can bleach fabrics. Towels, pillowcases and clothing that come into contact with the product may develop lighter patches.
Some people may also experience temporary irritation when starting treatment. This doesn’t necessarily mean the product is damaging your skin, but persistent or severe irritation is a reason to stop and seek professional advice.
For people in Kenya dealing with acne, the goal should be consistent treatment rather than using more product than necessary. Start gradually, follow the cleanser’s instructions and use a moisturiser to help maintain your skin barrier.
Despite these drawbacks, 2.5% benzoyl peroxide remains a useful option for treating mild to moderate acne when used appropriately.
