Does Benzoyl Peroxide Cause Skin Darkening?

Benzoyl peroxide does not typically cause skin darkening directly. However, it can sometimes cause dryness, redness and irritation, particularly when used too often or combined with other strong acne treatments.

For people with darker skin tones, including many Kenyans, skin inflammation can sometimes lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). This means a pimple or irritated patch can leave a darker mark after it heals. So, if benzoyl peroxide causes significant irritation, the resulting inflammation may contribute to dark marks.

This is why more isn’t necessarily better. Start with a suitable concentration such as 2.5%, follow the product instructions and avoid scrubbing your skin aggressively. If your face becomes excessively dry, burning or irritated, reduce how frequently you use the product.

It is also important to use sunscreen during the day. UV exposure can make existing dark acne marks more noticeable and slower to fade.

Benzoyl peroxide can actually be helpful for acne because controlling breakouts may reduce the number of new acne marks that develop. The key is finding a routine that treats acne without unnecessarily irritating your skin.
