How Long Should I Leave Benzoyl Peroxide on My Face for Acne?

If you’re using a benzoyl peroxide face wash, you generally don’t need to leave it on your face for a long time. Apply the cleanser to wet skin, gently massage it over the affected areas, and leave it on for about 1–2 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Acne Free Oil Free Acne Cleanser 2.5% Benzoyl PeroxideLeaving it on longer does not necessarily make it work faster. In fact, keeping benzoyl peroxide on your skin for too long may increase dryness, peeling, redness or irritation.

For a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cleanser, start according to the product’s directions and pay attention to how your skin responds. If your skin becomes very dry or irritated, reduce how often you use it rather than increasing the contact time.

This is especially important if you’re already using other acne ingredients such as adapalene, salicylic acid or exfoliating acids. Combining several irritating products can make your skin barrier unhappy.

After rinsing, gently pat your face dry and apply a suitable moisturiser. During the day, sunscreen is also important.

Remember, benzoyl peroxide needs consistent use over several weeks to produce noticeable acne improvement—not prolonged contact during one wash.
