What Can I Layer Over Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is relatively easy to incorporate into a skincare routine, but what you apply afterward matters, especially if your skin is sensitive or you’re treating acne and dark marks.

A moisturizer is one of the best products to layer over azelaic acid. It helps reduce dryness and supports the skin barrier, which can make an active treatment easier to tolerate. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends moisturizing when using acne treatments that can cause dryness or irritation.

Routine:
Cleanser → Azelaic acid → Moisturizer

2. Sunscreen

If you’re using azelaic acid in the morning, finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen is particularly important when you’re trying to improve post-acne dark marks because UV exposure can worsen hyperpigmentation.

3. Hydrating products

Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and panthenol can generally be paired with azelaic acid and may help keep the skin comfortable and hydrated.

That’s one reason Anua Azelaic Acid 10% + Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum is useful for a routine targeting blemishes while also providing hydration.

What about other active ingredients?

Be more cautious when layering azelaic acid with retinoids, AHAs, BHAs or benzoyl peroxide. These ingredients aren’t necessarily incompatible, but using several potentially irritating actives together can increase dryness and irritation. Introduce them gradually or use them at different times.
