Which Is Better, Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide?
There isn’t one winner for everyone. Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide work differently, so the better choice depends on the type of acne you’re trying to treat.
Benzoyl peroxide is particularly useful for inflammatory acne, including red pimples and pustules. It helps reduce acne-causing bacteria and inflammation. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends starting with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide to help reduce the likelihood of irritation.
Salicylic acid is especially useful for clogged pores, blackheads and whiteheads. It works by exfoliating the skin and helping unclog pores.
For someone in Kenya dealing with oily, congested skin, salicylic acid may be a useful option when blocked pores are the main concern. If you’re mainly dealing with inflamed pimples, benzoyl peroxide may be the more appropriate choice.
You don’t necessarily need to use both at once. Introducing several active ingredients together can increase irritation. Start with one product, use it consistently and give it several weeks to work.
If your acne is severe, painful or leaving scars, a dermatologist can recommend a treatment suited to your skin.
